Cramming Info

I'm not sure where my love/fetish/whatever comes from regarding the huge interest I have in the design and art of info-graphics. Whenever one pops up into my twitter feed, I'll email a link to myself (I had twenty-six emails waiting for me), and save it for later. Eventually I decided I would share them in a post, originally deciding to share only the ones I really liked for design, and then deciding to share all of them. All have some pretty good information, but the ones I enjoy the most are the minimalistic styled ones, with a clean cut vector drawn style.

The biggest aspect I enjoy about it is how it can cram information into such a simple form, cut it up and put it out in a nice digestible style. While the style I enjoy is text and graphic poster style, this system of putting out info also applies to maps.

Searching back far enough human-kind has been putting out info-graphics of one type or another for hundreds of years, as basic maps or rough drawings detailing some information. It's interesting to think that in some ways we still work to communicate our ideas, ideals, warnings, and ways in a similar way to our ancestors.

It's slowly evolved over the years, for the most part sticking to just being maps, then into pictographs, finally into the style I enjoy. The most recent evolution of the style is into motion info-graphics, which use a mix of motion and audio to detail out information quickly. The part I enjoy about motion info-graphics the most, is that they seem to get out more information, in a short time frame.

The issue with cooling, with laptops that is

I have a laptop system, and while you can't play the latest games on said system, there are a few fun ones that still fit my needs. The issue is that the default cooling in the laptop isn't really designed for CPU intensive areas, it's a system that's more for light end work, and a bit of casual use. There are very few laptop systems that are designed for gamer use, and those ones cost a lot more then the one I have in my possession.

As my warranty is now over and done, I worry more about putting it into too many high-end uses where it generates a fair bit of heat. I've had a couple of USB based laptop cooling pad/fan items and while they cool the system overall about five degrees (Celsius), that still leaves the system pretty hot most of the time. Recently I cleaned out the case with air, via its rear exhaust vents, and that has really made quite a difference. However, in any CPU intensive situations, its temperature still raises pretty quick, and the fan revs up rather high.

With my recent foray back into small hobby electronics, I decided that I should take big swing against my problem. The main issue I've seen is that the laptop cooling fans I can buy are all lower speed five volt systems, I procured a couple twelve volt fans, and other parts to make a platform.

Tonight I went and drew out some sketches of how I'm going to put this all together, wiring and case design wise. It's going to take a few attempts, and possible a card board mock up before I get it all perfect. The idea is a simple one overall, and I believe gives my system a better cooling option. The problem I have found with any laptop coolers so far, is generally the airflow is just put towards the center of the body.

Whereas the areas needed to be cooled (CPU, and wireless cards) aren't generally right in the center. For now I'm putting two fans, in the ares where my systems CPU and wifi cards are located, eventually I'm thinking to add two more fans for extra strength.

Tomorrow I need to get some electrical tape and small nuts/bolts, but still have to do some pretty hefty planning. The easiest part is wiring it all up, the hardest is making a case that's proper for my system.

(wouldn't hurt that it actually looks nice too.)

Other random part needed is some way to make a rubber like ring for the laptop to sit on, but not end up stuck to.

Ideas?

Customer service

Over the last few weeks I've been working to get back into some old hobbies, one of them being basic electronics. I dug out my old tech manuals, bought some old radios to rip apart, and got some basic supplies and tools. The first few items I cheeped out on, not wanting to blow a lot of cash on something I might not stick with for the long term. But doing some research and getting suggestions from a friend and a good blog, the one thing I wasn't going to cheap out on was a digital multimeter.

That item I did a fair bit of research on, checking what was out there, and how much I should really spend on a basic starter. After a bit more searching I narrowed it down to one item with a great review on a trusted blog, and searched out where to buy it. Turns out there was a store in town that supplies the specific one I wanted, so I rang them up.

This is where I end up getting some of the worst customer service ever.

The first time I call, I speak with a person who's able to not only confirm that they can order in it, but the price. I think great, I'll go in next week to order it, and all will be good. I head in that following Monday, place an order, and get told that in two weeks they will call me.

Two weeks go by pretty slowly when you're waiting for something you really want, and seems a tad pointless when you call the place and find out it was never ordered.

Or maybe it never showed up, or it got lost, etc etc.

So I deal with someone else, who says they will call the rep, place a new order, track it down, etc. Two days go by, no calls about any further news, when I call back I get told he was waiting on an email, but he will call them now instead.

Two more days go by, I still get nothing in reply, so I call back leave a message for the guy, and still get ignored.

At this point I've gotten rather tired of dealing with being ignored and treated like a not needed sale. I fully realize this company probably deals with big sales of larger customers, but whatever happened to all customers being important?

So I start googling around for other dealers, and then finally decide I'll call the companies other store in Vancouver. Randomly a friend tells me about a different store that he dealt with, and they have it for ten bucks less.

I finally end up ordering the item online, but with shipping I end up paying ten bucks more. At this point I've stopped caring, it's taken me THREE weeks, just to get to a point where I know the item will actually be shipped to me.

I'm unsure that I will call the company tomorrow and tell them that I don't need the device from them anymore, especially seeing that it doesn't look like they will order it anyways.

Or even return a simple phone call.

The lack of learning

When I was younger I read a ton of books, and spent a lot of time just learning random things, facts, or bits of knowledge. Hours of my life have been spent reading all sorts of books, webpages, manuals, and anything else I could get my hands on. But as I grew older, around when I was twenty-four-ish, it slowed, and then eventually stopped. I didn't read as much, didn't mess about with programming, 3D modeling/rendering, or philosophy.

It's not something that I meant to have happen, but it slowly did, and now years later I have no clue how to turn that back on. Over the last few months/weeks I've been kickstarting it in anyway that I can, from looking into projects to make (electronics), books to read (so many on my shelf), or programs to create (iOS programming). I know that I love creating things, anything really; programs, electronic gadgets, sewing items, photography, or just hand drawn art.

Somewhere between the age of zero and twenty-four-ish, I lost the urge to grow and learn from books/tinkering.

Frankly, I really want that back. I miss it, dearly.

Being Sick

Last weekend we did a nice long road trip down to Kamloops, Revelstoke, Kamloops, and then back to home. Felt fine that night when we got back, then the next morning woke up feeling like general ass, and for the rest of that week (right up until today actually).

When you're a kid, being sick is fun, you skip school, get fed in bed, watchtv/read, and sleep a heck of a lot. Being sick as an adult, not as much fun, you end up missing work (kinda fun, but less cash in bank), have to feed yourself, and generally sleep gets tad more old.

Generally now, I hate being sick, it's a overall pain in the ass, and no benefits. Plus you usually end up being sick on your off time, and then end up behind at work anyways.

That's my overall feeling about this week, is that it was quite bait of a waste, and that I could have done much more, if not weighed down by a cold.

Cats

I'm not sure what euphemism can be applied to owning cats, probably many on the internet that can be googled up. Pets haven't been a part of my life for the better part of the last decade or so, it's been interesting getting back used to cleaning up after cats and everything else. From trying to find toys for the two furballs, and seeing what treats they like (one prefers real meat and crackers, other prefers kitty wetfood and non-lactose ice cream). It's been a interesting and fur-filled trip of learning, and figuring just where to fit them into our lives. The male (Dandin), is about 15 years old, domestic short hair, grey and white, and a very gentle quiet kitty. Always acts like a gentleman, rarely meows for attention, and when he does it's always polite with gentle head-bops or little glances.

Wouldn't trade these two fuzzballs for anything at all, wonderful to have around, and very amusing to see them do so many things. From just hearing them mew for treats (or just when we open a can of soup), to watching them snuggle up and sleep in odd positions. They provide much happiness and overall entertainment, plus it's nice to come home and have a warm little bodies to snuggle.

We are still a the stage of trying to smooth out cleaning up after them, and getting their diets down pat. It'll slowly work out, and throughout that there will be a lot of photo and video opportunity until then (and after as well).

And in the end, it helps lower stress, and make us both laugh.

Friends

My junior high school drama teacher once told our class, as you get older its harder to make friends, and to keep the ones you used to have. I'm not sure if it was the age of my youth or optimism, but at that point I hoped she was lying or just wrong. That somehow it wouldn't be true for my bunch of friends, that somewhere along the road we would always have one another's backs.

I was half right, while I still know most of my old friends, we aren't as close as once were, nor are backs protected by some bond. Most of the time it feels very foreign to try and make conversation with people who's lives you lost track of years ago, or just can't seem to fit into.

Lately I've been working on getting back in touch with some of those old friends, and realizing it is harder to make friends from old ones, then it is to make new ones. One can say that nothing worth something is life is easy to attain, and that if you're still in touch then there is still something there.

But this could all be wind coming from my ass pipe.

Moving to a city you never wanted to come back to, has a way of making you think about things you forgot about, or just tried really hard to ignore. Such as why I lost touch with people that meant so much to me, helped me grow into who I am now, and where some of them are now. These aren't just the people in this city I wonder about, but the others I've met elsewhere as well.

A while ago I tried to re-connect with someone who was dear to me, only to have it all fail away, and I still wonder why. We exchanged some talk, and then it just stopped, no reason at all, other then no reply at all. That in some way halts me now, the worry of just ending up feeling more alone and lost, and some how comforted by the thought of having those friends, rather then actully having them to talk to.

One worries that somehow hanging out with those old friends, won't be as good as it used to be, or that it will feel weird or forced. That somehow you'll discover more differences that you ignored before, and at it'll be the end of that little experiment. That in the end of that moment, you'll both just feel foolish for even thinking you were still friends.

My problem is loyalty, I still feel some odd bond with people I haven't been around with in ages, to pay them back for the kindness once paid to me. That I get stuck in that feeling, and can't just let go of the old memories or times that were once had. Its similar to the train of thought in the "brain crack" video by Ze Frank, the idea of having those friends and doing things with them is more comforting then actually trying to.

Sitting here I realize a few of the people I have tried to get back in touch with over this past while have offered me and olive branch that I still should receive. While it might not be like "old times", there still is a shot for some good conversation, interaction, and fun. It's those people who have offered me a hand, that I should put some effort into seeing, and finding out where it'll all end up.

But then my mind wanders to the friends I've lost recently, through no major fights or incidents, just the usual drifting apart. For a lot of them it bugs me why it happened, as I don't know, and probably never will. That to me I the saddest part of the whole thought, never knowing the why and how that it all ended.

At this point I'm unsure what's worse, not knowing or knowing and feeling hurt. I suppose I would rather know, be hurt, get over it, and learn from the whole incident. Learning without that hurtful ending, is a tad like theoretical physics, you dont know when you're right or wrong.

But when it comes down to it, I can't control anything other then myself, so I have to realize at the end of the day, some names will just have question marks at the end of them, for all time.

Feelings

A friend once told me "when I'm in a bad mood, sad or lonely, I put on some Bon Jovi to bring my spirits back up", that used to work for me too. Over the years I've changed to listening Matthew Good to soothe my spirits, and just put my mind at ease, and not concentrating on my worse off thoughts.

Lately I just feel I'm in this huge funk, I moved back to my old home town to be with my girlfriend, and right now I'm just trying to get work (thankfully I'm on EI). It's been really hard moving back to a city you said you've never comme back to at all, find work with skills that dont seem to fit anyone's needs, and reconnect with old friends who have new friends and lives of their own.

Sometimes I'm reminded of how I felt here when I was in junior high school, that there was no need for me here, nor want or place for my abilities. It took some growing (and going into a highschool) to realize how big the world was, and that I could fit in somewhere. I'll admit now, I miss that feeling and those days sometimes, the world felt bigger, and that I felt where I knew I could go.

I drifted over the years, leaving that city for anouther, and making some friends along the way (friends are there for a reason, a season, or a year), then somewhere else, and finally back to where I started out. Somewhere in the back of my mind is the feeling that I should be further in life, more distinguished and accomplished.

Tinkering and learning on my own were my hobbies when I was younger, and all the way up to high school, and finally losing that yearning in my early twenties. That's what I miss the most, was losing myself in something, but at the same time gaining so much from that experience, adding to my skills or just sharpening what I had already.

Lately that's been coming back in small movements, little shifts here and there, but it's hard to get back into that groove. I somewhat feel like I'm just throwing darts out a window, hoping to hit the bullseye. It's a scary thought, to think it won't work, that somehow I'm just drifting more, and that it'll all blow up in my face. It's moment like those I have random things pop into my head telling me to fail now, and succeed later. Quotes from Google CEOs, a video from Ze Frank (the one about brain crack), and a few other items all push that method of thinking.

After dwelling on those tidbits, it's not like I have anything to lose, and really if I pull it off I have everything to gain. I'm not a genius, but thinking of genius' it comes to mind how many times it must have taken da Vinci or Edison to come up with their great ideas, even before they were famous for them.

I might always have a office job, work office hours, make crappy cash, but I have to go on the hope that somewhere in my life, there is a shot at some brilliance and genius. Maybe not world changing, but something that has the shot at being useful for a few people.

Sitting here eating some food, on my fifth cup of tea, I'm reminded of how much I use to enjoy writing for the sake of writing, and that if nothing else I should keep doing this and never stop.

I keep seeing the footage from Japan, the utter devastation from it all, and wanting to help. To actually go there, help search, rebuild homes, or just pass out food and water.

I fully realize I don't have the means, training, or abilities to do any of that.

All I can do is donate a few bucks to the Redcross, and hope that does some good on the other end.

It just makes one feel very small, that you can do so little, and just sit and watch.

I had a great blog post, partially written, on my iPhone... and I guess I closed the app... and low and behold... NO DRAFT... lovely. With all the 'auto' saving features today, one would (and wrongfully in this case) assume an app would be 'smart' enough to to so. Anyways, on with the post, as much of it as I can remember.

*cough*

In one way or anouther I've been using social media, since before it was even called that, from the last gasps of BBS' using dial up modems, to the inital (text only!) offerings of the Internet, to the bare beginnings of the 'graphical' Internet (anyone remember Netscape Navigator?). The Internet as a whole, has changed in huge leaps and bounds, before Twitter there was IRC, before blogs you could get a free (ad supported) website (Geocities!), and so on. New technologies always seem to pop up here and there, either by the death of one application, or the general evolution of it, it's always in a somewhat constant state of flux.

Today we have Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook... all of these giving people new outlets to use (or abuse)... and new people to meet as well. For the most part it's a welcome bit of change and interaction, and sometimes yes there are pains and issues.

But no one said life was easy.

My areas of social media have mostly been random stops and starts, and lately I've been thinking more and more about what to do with all of those areas. It's been on my brain for a while, you can't use a bunch of spots, and all say the same thing on them, nor just use one and say ALL of that there.

Well, not in my head anyways.

Twitter; random muses, short conversations, the go to "valley" to shout in (and hope it shouts back), news/events, and the "what should I see this weekend" place.

Tumblr; random thoughts that are too short for blogger.com, but too long for twitter.... also whatever photos I find, or things on tumblr to reblog

Instagram (zenFish) /Flickr; Instagram has encouraged me to shoot more often, and be more creative... Flickr is a back up spot for the photos.

Blogger.com ; more "serious" thoughts here, I'm not wanting to rant/rave like I used to (eons ago, and those posts are long gone, sadly)... I more want to come up with small 'essays' of thought to put down.

Youtube; I still have my week 'plans' on my wall for what to post and when, the goal is to get back into vlogging, and use that as a way to learn more about videography in general, and to hone those skills.

This post was mainly for myself, to get these thoughts out of my head, but also something I can point back to for people (if they ever ask) about "how" I use these services.

Anyways, found this article a bit ago, regarding the maker of this bit of software, that allowed people to connect to the Internet, again in the early days.

(like when Netscape was around)

Apparently he barely made any cash, everyone (EVERYONE) used it, but pretty much no one paid for it.

Come to think of it, I'm wondering where the heck I got it from.

I think my ISP gave it to me?

Wonder if they paid for it.

Little bits of packing done tonight, overall it's not going to take that long. Thanks to moving three times in the last couple of years, bits of things to toss, but mostly papers. Thankfully.

Picked through my RSS feeds today, and yes more craft links to check out, and still a whack of random Russian locals and items to post.

Right now? Sitting in bed, watching a episode of Top Gear (season 12) via Netflix on my Wii, and using my iPhone to write up said post.

Haven't really used this app (BlogPress), in quite some time, and it's really only handy for pure text posts. But from what I've seen it's the only "option" for posting to Blogger.com.

Writing a goal list for the year was a good move, personally, and puts down a few accomplishable lessons and life challenges.

I used to make "new years" resolutions, and well like most not keep them, or even remember them at all next eve. But listening to a podcast from Diggnation, regarding goals for the year, more to the point it was (slightly) about being okay with admitting a failure.

Doesn't mean you can't try again, or just decide not to.

It's more about making goals, shooting for something fun, and just working on self improvement.

Not a bad Monday after all I'd say.

Craft, DIY, and bling-gami.

If you're into DIY, general craft, or just curious how to make things, here's a few articles and links to get you satisfied.

Basic "howto" for screenprinting. ; just watched the video, and it's probably the most adorable way to teach/show you how easy (well said video makes it look easy) to screenprint.

Dust Sniper ; the video isn't that interesting, but the overall project is, a home made dust extraction system, on wheels, for those people who need one... and don't feel like buying one pre-made.

LED Under-cabinet lighting ; I have to say, this one interests me the most, not just for the savings in power you'd have, but just the overall pure fun factor of it. (and for when I take photos indoors, the easier ability to get a proper color temperature).

Flickr Pool of Tamper proof screws ; handy of those of you that are able to craft tools on your own, or are just curious of some of the crazy tops out there that keep you out of your own stuff.

Mobile Document Camera Stand ; Something else that I'm rather wanting to make, that would be handy for document copying, but also as a stand for using my phone more for skype calls.

Tweezers ; Yes, you read that right, but these are also the most fancy tweezers I've seen... well... ever.

When normal tipping isn't enough. ; Click, just trust me.

Papier-Mâché Enclosures ; If you're into DIY electronics, or just happen to have busted something up, why not make a new case for it? Hell I'm tempted to break something just to use this method.

Skype Retro Phone ; while it doesn't link to the actual 'meat' of how to do it, it's a nice over view, and a good enough reason to pick up a paper (or digital) copy of that magazine. It's on my list of "fun ideas" for when I happen to have a old 1932 Bell Phone.

Wireless Mesh Network for Lego NXT ; ever since the NXT system came out, I've wanted to get one for random fun, I still haven't, mostly because I'm not sure what I'd really do with it. But for the day I do, I atleast know I can have a whole whack of them controlled at once. Hello remote controlled nerf guns!

Home Carbonation system ; Carbonated milk anyone?

Arduino Enigma Machine ; for those of you who might be travelling back in time, and need to crack Nazi code, this is just for you. (also for those who feel the need to leave rude messages to roomates, that only you can read)

Free Resistor Calculator ; If you're teaching yourself (or something else) resistor code, this would be a handy-dandy little item to have. (and given that I've forgotten said code, handy for me too).

How to : Restore a vintage saw ; I have a odd interest in the old vintage items, and more on how you can make them last or fix them up. For those of you with the same interest, here you are, don't cut yourself.

Today one twitter someone was recently commenting on how sad it is, that everyone (well most of the populous) is constantly watching, commenting, laughing, and 'living' the every waking moment of a certain movie star. Who's on a one person PR campaign, it seems, to trash their own career, destroy their own life, and scar everyones emotions around him into oblivion. The general comment was that "it's sad" we all constantly look/watch/listen to these people, instead of just ignore them.

Below is a mash-up of my general response to said tweet.

"pretty simple, people want entertainment, drama, and escapism from the day to day dull. others want to be venomous, mean and petty. Hollywood fills this "need", if we didn't need it... It wouldn't happen. basically our human culture us to blame. Ask yourself this, name five major things Einstein did. now name off five best players from the NHL/CFL/etc... We put more value to "cool" then "smart" "

That's the basic gist of it, while yes it's sad we all (most of us) watch people fall down fast and hard into the pavement, our culture itself is geared towards it. It's been slowly pushing all of this way for generations, if you look back far enough you'll find "stars" for every generation previous to us. The saddest part to this, is that rarely in our history have the 'proper' people been exhaulted to any super-fame, you don't have Einstein jerseys, or Marie Curie shoes. Why, well that would be boring, not fun and frankly not sellable. How much 'drama' did any of those people cause, in terms of our societal need for input of todays (or yesterdays drama) standards?

None, and over the last few decades our culture has pushed more and more towards a "star fucker" eye-sight, we watch what we can't have, and we lust what we want to do. (I say this as a generalization, not everyone wants to snort cocaine, drive drunk, or any other 'fun' things famous-types have done). But we do want to have adventure in some way, and whats more fun? Discovering a far off solar system full of alien life.... or blowing fifty grand on a booze filled weekend that ends in possible jail-time.

In the past, possibly the former, but now it's all about the latter. We, as society, want fame and fortune, but if we can only have one, we'll take fame every time.

It's not a horrible thing to want this fame, it just depends what you're willing to do for it, or what type of 'fame' you want.

In regards to why we constantly watch famous types of all natures self implode seemingly without any self control? Simple, some of us want to watch, see the drama at a safe distance, and be entertained. Others want to have something to rip into, spit venom at, from that same safe distance. It doesn't help that 'all' of society plays this game, repeats the stories, and passed along the information by word of mouth and so on.

We as single people, or even as a few groups together, can't do anything about it. If you really want to change the game, you have to play it from the inside, but really, who wants to do that? You either enjoy the ride you're given, or jump off enough quick to not fall to hard on your own words and actions.

It's a by product of our consumerist culture, while there are small changes all over the planet that are going against this, it's going to be a while before it takes serious root.

So, pick a seat, and either throw your popcorn, or just enjoy the show.

It's going to be here for a while.

(and for note, I don't know much about Einstein, nor any major sports. I'm just a hobbyist pop culture psychologist)

Finally found the landscape mode in my blogging app, which makes this a tad easier on my rather large hands. Today started off on a bad go, and didn't seem to get that much better, feeling wise at-least. Overall it was fine, nothing really to mention, hoping it's just my own internal overreaction.

Tonight is a little bit of running around, minor errands, and then some reading, and possibly starting to write a letter to Becky.

Still researching some photo editing apps for iPhone, found a couple so far that have made me happy.. But so far still happiest overall with Adobe's free mobile app.

A group of researchers in South Africa has developed a filter that can purify water straight from the bottle.

It sits inside a tube that can be fitted on top of a bottle and purifies water as it is poured on a cup.

The designer behind the filter, Dr Eugene Cloete, from the Stellenbosch University in South Africa, says the filter is only as big as an ordinary tea bag.

Two point seven three gigs of data, on my camera. This kids, is why I need to keep an eye on that a little more, and remember to download more often.

Moot point, this weekend has been a lot of ups and downs, long walks, talks, and more then a few drinks. Usually after traumatic events, I always sunk into my shell, and added more mortar to my personal wall. It was my safe zone, and easy place to shrink back into, look at the world be angry or sad, judge or not judge, but mostly, just to avoid interaction.

Key word "was".

Einstein once said "Insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.". Change that for "stupidity", and you have what I've been doing for years.

Now, I'm not a stupid person, I pushed myself a fair bit to try different things in school, did first year university physics (not well), english (too easy), electronics (did that mostly as a home self schooled course), math (loved it), and computer programming (amusing fun), and philosophy (loved it, miss it).

I'll point out, in the last ten years, that whole english grammar thing? Right out the window.

The point is, rather, that we all have our faults and limitations. But most of our limitations are self-imposed, end-caps that we put to some imaginary line. I realize there are things we all can't do, but most things in life that we say we "can't", is just to not try at all.

I've told myself for about twenty years, I can't do things.

I can't tell people something upsets me.

I can't ask for help.

I can't let people to close, or in to my little comfort zone.

What I've realized this weekend, mostly importantly. Is that I can do (legally mind you), whatever the hell I damn well please.

This weekend I did a few things I've never done before.

1. I sang for no reason, in the shower, due to not remembering lyrics to songs, I decided to sing my nations national anthem "O' Canada". It was either that, or Christmas, and as much as I love Jesus Christ, it would be a little weird.

2. I haggled a price on something at a flea market, I used my charm (I know, odd right?) to get the price off something knocked down to what I wanted.

3. I finally, for fun, decided to take something I've wanted for a while, and was fully prepared to defend my actions. (with words, not violence).

Long story short, I just took my little safe bunker zone, demo'd it, and tossed it away. I'm wanting to let more people in, not everyone, but for once I want people to really know me.

I'll have my good, and bad days.

But in the end, don't we all?

I'm sitting here at a friends place, 730 am, on a Sunday, a cat is wandering the living room, I can hear light rain outside... the cat just jumped onto my right elbow.... and is now trying to block the keyboard.

I miss purring cats, over the years I've had a few, and that purring noise is so comforting.

But yes, light right outside, birds starting to chirp.

I don't know what to really write, it's been so long since I've been open and honest.

Hell, I don't know if I ever really have been, and right now I'm okay, and then not.

The cat can't make up her mind if she's putting her head out the window, or not.

I know that it's been so long since I've really written any words, I don't know how to really put them together all that well.

It's been, I'm guessing a good decade since my last real letter, everything in between has either been rambling, or for business.

Bit sad for the guy that could have easily majored in English in university.

I've been working through things as much as I can over the last few days, the part that hurts the most is that I have to deal with things from twenty years ago, before I can deal with what happened this week.

The part that is hardest is not being able to reach out, and call someone.

I've been talking to friends, and staying busy for this weekend, hanging out, talking, and mostly just listening to music when I'm alone.

There are a lot of things I have to get off my chest, fences to mend, apologies to make, and quite a few letters that need to be written.

I shouldn't be in a rush, but I am.

Friday I was on Third Beach in Vancouver, just laying on one of the logs, gravity pulling my arms down...

And I looked up for the first time in years, not at the sky, but what how huge the night sky is.

The darkness that stretches out to infinity.

I realized something, that I'm just this small speck in this universe, some how that was utterly comforting at the time.

Still is.

Until I get better with writing, these posts are going to be all over the place, it's hard after this much time of not really putting words out, to put them out at all right.

So, my apologies for the grammar.

I'm still staying off facebook, right now I have my own life to look at, and take care of.

I'm sick on my only two days off, to be really honest I've been sick since about Tuesday.

Long story short, I can't take sick days off, I'm not allowed.

But I still here, and think on things, mostly about last night when I was hanging out with my Dad.

Every once and a a while my parents bring up the idea for working with the RCMP (or other police agencies), as a dispatcher.

It's a job that my Mom used to do, and my parents both think I'd be a perfect fit.

They think I have the qualities to do the job (background in peer counselling, certain personality traits, etc), and that it would be a really good fit.

While I know I could do the job, I'm not sure I want to, shift work has never been appealing to me, and I don't like the idea of not living in Vancouver either.

But, I'm 29, and I need to stop wasting my life.

That's where I'm stuck.

I'm "trained" in graphic design, very creative, and have the ability to craft/design (and draw when I'm practiced) anything I can think up.

But therein lies the issue.

How?

To get from here, to there, and actually turn it into a profitable career?

Friend of mine tells me to put my portfolio together, and just get little jobs from craigslist, see about doing some free work for non-profits in town as well. To build things up, and get back into it, and that makes tons of sense.

My issue is fear.

Generally of failure.

I'm getting to the "no turning back" point in life, where you either have to find something you can stand to do for the next 40 years, or ...

I don't know, what is the "instructions" for this part of life?

Basically what I'm asking is this.

How does one get into graphic design / illustration, because at the school I went to, they literally just didn't bother showing us how.

Just finished watching "Crank High Voltage", pure B-Movie goodness. Frankly had a lot of style to the filming/fx to it, so depends what you're looking for, but always something good about any film.

I love looking out over the city while sitting at my desk, it's not hugely inspiring (yet), but it's helping push me about more and more.

Decided today that I need art hanging in my apartment; two things spring from this idea.

Well three, now.

2. Friends photos in frames.
